We are a small family farm located about 10 minutes south of Madison, Wisconsin in the rural area of Oregon, Wisconsin. We are USDA certified to sell meat and eggs and have been raising free range, pastured chickens for nine years. Our laying flock consists of all brown egg layers. Those breeds include Rhode Island Red, Cuckoo Maran and Hyline Hybrid as well as some of our own mixed breed layers. We breed and raise most of our layers from our existing stock. These birds have their own insulated, heated coop in order make it through the winters. It is lighted so the chickens continue laying all year. When the weather is nice, they are allowed the run of the farm. They are voracious foragers and receive only minor supplemental food during the warmer months. In the winter, we supplement their commercial diet with various fruits, veggies and breads from our table. All our birds undergo Pollurum testing yearly to ensure a healthy flock. We do not feed any antibiotics or hormones to any of our animals on our property unless they are sick and have been seen by a veterinarian.
Our meat flock chickens are primarily of the Cornish/Rock mix. We purchase those as day old chicks from Sunnyside Hatchery here in Wisconsin. We pasture them with our sheep and horses and let them work to find their food. They do get a little supplemental commercial food in the morning and evening but have to find most of their own from the fields. This has led to our children winning numerous championships at our local fairs with their meat birds. They are firm of flesh, free of disease and lead a quality life with sunshine and fresh air. We use Twin Cities Pack in Clinton, Wi for our processing. I stay with the birds until the last is processed humanely. They are then flash frozen and vacuum packed for long term storage. You can chose to order whole or half of a chicken and it is priced per lbs.
This past year, we raised our first grass-fed beef. The flavor is wonderful. We buy our steers as young weaned calves and feed them out on pasture in the summer and hay in the winter. It takes about 6 months longer to get them to market weight going this route but the quality is worth it. On a conventionally fed beef, there will be 2-3 inches of fat that must be cut away while on a grass-fed carcass, there is only about an inch or less, thus making it a much healthier option. We use Hoesly’s Meats in New Glarus, Wi for our beef processing. They are a small processing plant that is also a butcher shop, allowing you to customize the order when we have a steer to take to market.
During the growing season, we raise various hot peppers, herbs and eggplants. We also raise some gourds and various melons.
Thank you for your interest in buying local. I look forward to hearing from you!
Renee Frank, owner and caretaker.
